What’s up dudes?! Straight outta Malibu braa!

So we’re day 5 of recording and all is going swimmingly. We’re well happy to have Noah Georgeson producing, top top bloke and the record is already sounding awesome.

Just to fill you all in, after we landed from Denver we had a couple weeks of sun, sand and rehearsals then last week we started recording proper. Before that however we were lucky enough to take a trip to Joshua Tree on one of our days off which was mind blowing. None of us had ever seen anything like it.

After that we played a surprise set at the legendary Pappy and Harriet’s open mic night. We went down a storm then proceeded to tuck into some serious desert grub.

Other notable highlights so far aside from sweet studio tones and grooves have to be ice cream sandwiches, roscoe’s chicken and waffles and the jaw droppingly amazing view we are greeted with each morning(and evening) from atop the canyons. They say the grass is always greener but this is ridiculous!

We’ve pretty much completed all the basic tracking so now it’s time for overdubbing and vocals. We can’t wait for you all to hear it! We hope it’s gonna blow your minds…

Stranded in Denver

As a new sun rises, I find to my surprise and eternal dismay that I wake in the baron open plains just outside of Denver. This mini city of pop-up hotels and highways offer a sort of offensive comfort as they invade the landscape. All the rotten eggs of budget air travel have no doubt congregated here many a time before me, but here I am, and I’m not gonna be leaving quickly.

Yesterday was our last day in Texas, and we raced to get out of the state before tornados and other alien weather descended upon us, but we were not as lucky as some. The sky turned black as we stared out at the tarmac, waiting, and waiting. I genuinely had a couple of Buddy Holly moments during take-off, wondering who or what was really in control of the airplane. Thanks to the long delay in getting off the ground we missed our connection to our final destination Los Angeles and spent the early hours of the morning queueing for a $12 discount on local Denver hotels and praying that the travel gods showed us mercy with an early morning flight, but after some time spent waiting at the “help desk” our hopes were dashed by “a software issue” which prevented the rather smug button pushers from placing us on another airline’s flight (COMPUTER SAYS NO!). The next connection we would be forced to accept was at 9pm the following day.

We headed out into the wintery Colorado night armed only with our hand luggage (a pair of stingray boots, some guitar pedals, a few Austin, TX stickers and bandanas, a camera) and the summer clothes on our backs. As we attempted to haggle with an irate cab driver over a $50 ride 5 minutes down the road we couldn’t help but envy Reid who was booked on a direct flight to LA for other reasons and had already arrived. Thoughts of him approaching his eggs sunny side up in the morning while overlooking Malibu’s finest beachfront views only served to highlight the contrast of our situations. Laurie, beset with flu coughed and spluttered as he clambered into the cab, hooded and caped in whatever clothes Sam had rolled into his stingray boots, nothing to look forward to but a long night of fever chills.

Morning brought the promise of free breakfast and a late check-out. Some of us made it downstairs in time for the final 9am call to be welcomed by rehydrated eggs, watery juice from concentrated fruit that could possibly have been oranges and fresh waffles, the saving grace of our decision to bother at all. Dissatisfied and lacking the incentive to finish our breakfast we headed back to our rooms to prepare for the day ahead of us.

A Day Out On Canvey Island

Awriiight?!

Being the big Dr. Feelgood fans that we are we decided it was high time we took a trip down to Canvey Island. First we picked up a hardcase from a Canvey local who was also schooled by the guitar weilding maniac Wilko Johnson of aforementioned band. Lucky bloke! We had ourselves some local cuisine in the form of pie and mash then set off to see the sights.

Canvey Island is pretty much a floating time warp. Locals seem to either loiter by the derelict amusement park or compulsively ram shrapnel into the knackered old penny arcades. After a few photos we hightailed it outta there and went down by the jetty.

The infamous jetty does have a sort of grim charm to it. You look out onto the swampy thames delta and see a vast backdrop of industrial wasteland.

Canvey and it’s residents are similar to that of the feelgood’s music. They like what they like and whilst everywhere else around them is trying to keep up with the next big thing, they seem content with what they have. So hey, who are we to judge? A lick or two of paint and a rubbish collection could go a long way though folks. Just a suggestion.

We came, we saw and most importantly, we left! Thanks for having us. Till next time.

I’m sitting here at my desk as one of Tom Waits’s many masterpieces MULE VARIATIONS washes over me like a beautiful unpolished bath. I have been back off tour for a while now and and gearing up for Christmas and all the entanglements it will impose (IF ANY OF YOU ARE WONDERING I WOULD LIKE A PONY PLEASE).

I was touring for a week supporting Marcus Foster and over the week we dropped in on Cambridge, Nottingham, Manchester, Stroud, Bristol and last but by no means least Birmingham. We also did a show at London’s Dingwalls which was a great night for me as I did a solo show and then sped of to the Cuckoo Club to do a show with the guys (Treetops) for renowned songwriter Guy Chambers.

As is often the case on tour I met a broad spectrum of music lovers of all ages and as always a few nutters. I saw some great scenery and came away with several albums in my head from hours spent in the van between cities. To name a few, TOM WAITS ‘MULE VARIATIONS’ (Just perfect) ELLIOT SMITH ‘FIGURE 8’ (Amazing production I won’t be putting this down for a while), BEACH BOYS ‘BEST OF’ (How can you ever feel bad when this is playing), REM ‘OUT OF TIME’ (Who would win in a fight? Michael Stipe or Thom Yorke?)

And last but not least…. The 1990 forgotten treasure, The SYNTHESIZER ALBUM

YES you may say I have changed and abandoned any credibility I may have mustered but please let me explain.. I had a dream one night on tour and it took me back to age ten when I bought this record on casette I do not know why but the dream brought it all back to me and I had to find a copy of this monstrosity.

The record features such classics as AUTOBAHN, CROCKETT’S THEME and the sublime EVE OF THE WAR (War of the worlds). It says on the cover a big thanks to ROLAND UK..I BEG TO DIFFER. This album is a misguided experiment in new technology and was proudly recorded live to DAT. Hmmm. Produced arranged and performed by Chris Cozens and Nick Magnus. Where are they now? Anyone? I challenge you people out there to air your dirty musical laundry with me.

What’s in your closet? This album makes me shiver with disgust but its still spinning as I write and I know my girlfriend is gonna love it….
